The issues of radicalization and counter-radicalization are highly relevant factors in the Western governments’ agendas. In this connection, the expressions ‘’radicalization’’, ‘’extremism’’ and “terrorism” respond to realities that must necessarily be differentiated. The effectiveness of the design and subsequent implementation of preventive and proactive policies in security issues requires starting with a correct distinction and definition of the different existing phenomena. This constitutes the central aim of this article. I try to make a conceptual clarification and distinguish among: ‘’radicalism’’, ‘’extremism’’, ‘‘violent activist extremism’’ and ‘’terrorism’’.
