About the Journal

Cálamo is an academic journal, published biannually (January and July), edited by the Law School of Universidad de las Americas, Ecuador. It is aimed at the scientific community and the public interested in legal studies and its relationship with other sciences. Its objective and mission is to generate and disseminate interdisciplinary knowledge of Law that contributes to the analysis of contemporary problems, with special emphasis on Latin America. It is an open access scientific publication available in digital and printed format since 2014.

The journal makes two calls for papers focused on a central topic each year, and receives contributions on various topics throughout the year. The texts published in the Dossier and Essay sections are research texts that contribute with knowledge and analysis of Law, as well as interdisciplinary studies that show the connections of this discipline with society, from Political and Constitutional Theory to Philosophy and Social Sciences. Cálamo also publishes reviews and interviews in each issue, preferably related to the central topic of each issue.

History

The birth of Cálamo is part of an important change in higher education in Ecuador. At that time, the country was structurally considering leaving a position of consumption and reproduction of knowledge to become an actor in it and contribute to its construction.

In this context, the Law School of Universidad de las Américas, decided in 2014 to create its legal studies journal, and, aware of the complexity of analyzing reality, it considered doing so from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Initially, the journal was a platform for the Law School professors to initiate or strengthen their academic writing in dialogue with external authors. Then, it became a space for dialogue with those international colleagues who now contribute to each number.

Since the first issue, dedicated to gender studies, Cálamo has dedicated itself to addressing current issues, relevant and necessary in academic and social discussion. Ever since, various topics have been discussed, related to public and private law, local and international law, of the country and the region.

On the path to the internationalization of the journal, and in order to guarantee a high level of academic quality, it obtained its first indexing in Latindex since the fourth number. We continue working permanently to achieve greater dissemination of the journal and to guarantee the highest quality standards.
